The 3rd Annual Dancing with the Stars Austin, presented by Lexus of Austin, was held at the Hilton Austin on Sunday, December 6, 2010, to benefit the Center for Child Protection, a nationally accredited children’s advocacy center serving children of Travis County. The event, coupled with the Center’s annual luxury car raffle, grossed more than $675,000. The Center is the only nonprofit in Travis County involved with investigations of crimes against children.
“Once again, Lexus of Austin and the Austin community have given hope to abused children,” said Sandra Martin, CEO of the Center for Child Protection. “With their support, children have a voice and can receive the care they need to begin the healing process.”
In festive dance attire, twelve notable Austinites and their professional dance partners glided across the dance floor, performing the Cha-Cha, Foxtrot, Hustle and Rhumba for over 900 guests in the Hilton Austin Grand Ballroom. Featured Austin celebrities included Joanie Bentzin, energetic Austin promoter; Gigi Bryant, fifth generation Austinite and businesswoman; Eloise DeJoria, actress and Paul Mitchell Systems spokesperson; Charles Duggan, Broadway and Greater Tuna producer; Richard Garriott, first second generation astronaut and computer game developer; Sheriff Greg Hamilton, Travis County Sheriff; Susan Lubin, Austin Lyric Opera supporter and volunteer; Holly Mills-Gardner, Miss Texas USA 1998 and TV Personality; Dan Neil, former Denver Bronco and two-time Super Bowl champion; Dave Steakley, ZACH Theatre Producing Artistic Director; Michelle Valles, local news anchor; and Mitchell Zoll, lawyer with Strasburger & Price. Sabrina Barker-Truscott of All Ways Dance served as dance director and introduced the judges and each Austin celebrity and their professional partner.
Audience votes were compiled and celebrity dancer Dave Steakley and his professional dance partner Jolie Generalov were winners of the coveted mirror-ball trophy. They performed a high energy samba with colorful costumes. The first runner-up was Sheriff Greg Hamilton with his professional dance partner, Lidsay LeBlanc and the second runner-up was Holly Mills-Gardner with professional partner Shaun Bruno.
In addition to the dance competition, guests enjoyed a silent auction and a live auction conducted by emcee for the night, John Paul DeJoria. The live auction featured a seven night stay in a villa in Tuscany, Italy and dancing spots in the 2010 Dancing with the Stars Austin. Uniformed officers from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and Austin Police Department took part in the event, serving as bid spotters during the live auction and fund-a-need.
