SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN: THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON CHILD SAFETY

Presenter: Dr. Sharon Cooper MD, FAAP, CEO of Developmental and Forensic Pediatrics, PA - Dr. Cooper is CEO of a consulting firm that provides medical care, training, and expert witness experience in child maltreatment cases, as well as medical care for children with disabilities. She works regularly with numerous national and international investigative agencies on Internet crimes against children cases.

Dr. Cooper has provided congressional testimony regarding compliant victimization of youths who are exploited through Internet technology. She is also a member of an international expert working group on children and young persons with abusive and violent experiences connected to cyberspace, hosted by the Council of the Baltic Sea States, and the Swedish Children’s Welfare Foundation.

She has lectured both nationally and internationally in well over 300 conferences for the U.S. Department of Justice, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Interpol. Dr. Cooper has published chapters in texts, and is the lead author of the first comprehensive text on the medical, legal, and social science aspects of child sexual exploitation and Internet crimes against children.

COMPLIANT CHILD VICTIMS: CONFRONTING AN UNCOMFORTABLE REALITY
Learn about a child's compliance in cases of sexual victimization.

Presenter: Kenneth V. Lanning, CAC Consultants, Former FBI Special Agent - Mr. Lanning is currently a consultant in the area of crimes against children. Before retiring in 2000, he was a Special Agent with the FBI for more than 30 years. He was assigned to the FBI Behavioral Science Unit and the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia for 20 of those years. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) and is a former member of the APSAC Advisory Board. He is a current member of the Advisory Board of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA). Mr. Lanning is the 1996 recipient of the Outstanding Professional Award from APSAC for outstanding contributions to the field of child maltreatment and the 1997 recipient of the FBI Director’s Annual Award for Special Achievement for his career accomplishments in connection with missing and exploited children. He has lectured and trained thousands of police officers and criminal justice professionals.

INTERVIEWING CHILDREN WHO HAVE WITNESSED VIOLENT DEATH

Presenter: Special Agent Donna M. Pence, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, retired - Donna M. Pence is a senior trainer with the Academy for Professional Excellence, a program of San Diego State University Foundation, working with the Southern Region Public Child Welfare Training Academy. She trains nationally and internationally and develops training on issues related to the identification and investigation of child maltreatment, neglect, and child death. She is a member of the FBI National Academy Associates, a former board member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, and co-chair of APSAC’s task force on the guidelines on investigative interviewing of child victims. Ms. Pence has contributed toward numerous publications on child abuse investigations and co-authored Team Investigation of Child Sexual Abuse: The Uneasy Alliance with Charles Wilson. Prior to her current position, Ms. Pence spent 25 years with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, appointed as the first female special agent in 1976. During her tenure with the Bureau, her assignments included undercover agent, homicide, sex crime investigations, and child abuse investigations. She also supervised the Drug Enforcement and Recruitment Units. Her first law enforcement position was patrol officer with the Metro Nashville Park Police. Ms. Pence is a graduate of Belmont University with a B. S. in Criminal Justice.

BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY - STRATEGIES FOR PROFESSIONALS AND COMMUNITIES
Learn about the culture of poverty, barriers to change, and successful program designs and policies to end generational poverty.

Who Should Attend? Social service providers, community advocates, CPS caseworkers, CAC staff

Presenter: Terie D. Smith, MA Ed, OCPS II Terie Dreussi Smith has been a consultant and speaker with aha! Process, Inc. since 1997 where she helps communities implement strategies and policies to help youth and families break out of generational poverty. She is a co-author of Bridges Out of Poverty, Strategies for Professionals and Community with Ruby Payne and Philip DeVol. Prior to her consultancy, Ms. Smith worked as a grant writer and social program manager for youth-based service agencies, community coalitions, and schools where she assisted communities to embed the Bridges Out of Poverty concepts to benefit families and youth. She spent nine years as Supervisor of Prevention Services at a community alcohol/drug treatment and prevention organization and was instrumental in the organization’s redesign of programs and services for prevention and early intervention clients from generational poverty. Ms. Smith has served adjunct faculty for several colleges focusing on empowering adult students transitioning out of poverty. She is a former public school teacher.
