Friday, May 3
The Hills of Lakeway Signature Course

The next morning, more than 30 former NFL players including Bill Bates, Cullen Loeffler and Kerry Cash came to The Hills of Lakeway Signature Course to partner up with team sponsors to compete for an all-expense paid trip to the NFL Alumni’s 2020 Super Bowl of Golf Tournament. Grand prize at the tournament went to the Universal Forest Products team, comprised of Tony Brasher, Jim Hill, Matt Isley, Richie Ford and NFL Alumni Captain Steve Crosby.

Lowell Doug English is a former American football defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions. Born and raised in Dallas, English attended The University of Texas, where he was a history major before graduating in 1976. During his time at UT, he helped the Longhorns win three Southwest Conference titles. Also while at UT, he joined the Texas Cowboys, an honorary men’s service organization with the motto of “give the best you have to Texas, and the best will come back to you.” In 2011, English was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

As a second-round draft pick in 1975, English joined the Detroit Lions and helped develop the feared “Silver Rush” defensive line. In 1979, English was awarded the team’s Defensive Most Valuable Player award with 122 tackles, 90 of which were solo tackles, and 6.5 sacks. In 1983, English had his best season ever, with 13 sacks and two safeties, making him only one of 17 NFL players to record two safeties in a single season. This was the same year that the Lions won the NFC Central Division title. He finished his career with 59 sacks, which places him sixth on the Lions’ all-time list. He went to four Pro Bowls and was named All-Pro in 1981, 1983 and 1984. English had four safeties throughout his career, tying him with Ted Hendricks and Jared Allen for the most safeties in NFL history.

English and his wife, Claire, currently reside in West Lake Hills while also spending time at their ranch in Spicewood on the shores of Lake Travis. He serves as the founder of PowerDrive Training Products, a strength and equipment company for football players. In 1979, English founded the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation, where he currently serves as the Founder and President. The Foundation’s mission is “to cure Spinal Cord Paralysis (SCP) through funding research, recovery and recreation (three R’s).” English has been a member of the NFL Alumni Association since its inception and has actively supported the Center for Child Protection for over 10 years.
