As we kick off 2025, we begin the year reflecting on an incredible milestone for the Center for Child Protection: on December 3rd, 2024, we saw our 25,000th child for a forensic interview since opening our doors in 1992.

This significant milestone serves as a powerful reminder of all those who have been given the chance to share their story in a safe, supportive environment. These children were greeted with warm smiles in a space designed just for them. A space filled with kindness, understanding, and care.

Without the Center, these children might have faced the daunting task of sharing their experiences many different times in intimidating interrogation rooms or formal offices. Some may never have shared their stories at all, missing the chance to take those crucial first steps toward healing and justice.

December 3rd also marked a meaningful connection: it is the birthday of Christopher Wohlers, the child whose tragic death led to the creation of the Travis County Children’s Advocacy Center, now known as the Center for Child Protection. This milestone feels like a tribute to Christopher’s memory and a testament to the vision of those early community members who believed, “We can do better for children.”

From Small Beginnings to a Thriving Mission

As we reflect on this milestone, it’s incredible to see how far the Center has come. Back in 1992, our small team operated with a scrappy determination, united by a shared belief in creating a better future for children in Travis County. In those days, our entire staff pitched in to greet families, host events, and manage operations. Interviews with children were recorded on VHS tapes, and “departments” were often just one person juggling multiple roles.

Today, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our team, our supporters, and the Travis County community, we have grown into an organization that continues to evolve to meet the needs of the children and families we serve. But one thing has never changed: our unwavering commitment to providing a safe, welcoming space where children can tell their story.

Looking Ahead

As we begin 2025, we’re filled with gratitude for the journey that brought us here and the people who made it possible. To our team, partners, and supporters: thank you for helping us create a legacy of hope and healing.

Together, we look forward to continuing this important work – ensuring that every child who comes through our doors is met with compassion, care, and the opportunity to take the first steps toward a brighter future.

Here’s to another year of making a difference, one story at a time.

Let’s keep making an impact!
