All parents face challenges when it comes to raising their kids and keeping them safe. We're here to help. Learning how to openly communicate with your child and provide healthy and safe environments is key to preventing and reporting child abuse.

Talking with Children about Sexual Abuse

1 Hour
Having age-appropriate, open conversations about our bodies, sex and boundaries is an important step in protecting children. In this training, participants will learn how to use everyday opportunities to talk with children about sexual abuse and receive examples of how to have these conversations with children of all ages.

Mandated reporters play a crucial role in ending child abuse and neglect in Travis County. Our free education trainings will help you recognize, respond and report child abuse.

Teen Safety Matters

30-55 Minutes/ 2 55 minute lessons or 4 shorter lessons
Two 55-minute fun and engaging classroom lessons (can be presented in four shorter lessons)-MBF Teen Safety Matters® is a comprehensive, evidence-informed prevention education program for middle school students in grades 6 – 8 and high school students in grades 9 – 12. The program addresses emotional, physical, and digital safety, and teaches students and adults how to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to the four types of child abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, neglect), exploitation, trafficking, sexual assault, relationship abuse, bullying, cyberbullying, and digital dangers.

Netzsmartz

30-50 mins
NetSmartz is NCMEC’s online safety education program. It provides age-appropriate videos and activities to help teach children be safer online with the goal of helping children to become more aware of potential online risks and empowering them to help prevent victimization by making safer choices on- and offline. NetSmartz features two presentations tailored for elementary school-aged children: one for grades K-2, and another for grades 3-5. Each is typically 30 minutes in length and includes videos and language designed to help children understand how to be both safer online and good digital citizens.

Speak Up, Be Safe

30 – 50 minutes/ 2 part lessons
Consists of 2 lessons, usually done within a week from each other, time varies on grade level, usually between 30-50 minutes) This training is a primary prevention curriculum aimed at stopping and preventing child abuse and neglect. The content and delivery of the Pre-K through 12th grade curricula are based on several areas of research including child development, learning styles, social psychology, and child abuse and neglect prevention.

Polyvagal Training

1 – 2.5 Hours
Using Dr. Bruce Perry’s evidence-based approach on NMT and Dr. Porges approach on Polyvagal theory, this workshop will discuss basic brain development and the impact that abuse, neglect, and other types of trauma may have on the Polyvagal system. Participants will learn how this system impacts feelings of safety, the intimacy barrier and capacity to form and maintain relationships.

Child Abuse Neglect Identification & Reporting

Time Varies
This course is designed to educate participants on the signs and symptoms of abuse, how to properly respond if a child discloses abuse, as well as understanding the process of an abuse investigation. By the end of this training, participants will have the knowledge to identify and report abuse, as well as provide support to children who have experienced abuse. This training meets the requirements for Texas Education Code § 38.0041 policies addressing Sexual Abuse and Other Maltreatment of Children.

Stewards of Children

2 Hours
Stewards of Children is a sexual abuse prevention training program that educates through a variety of training modules to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. This training meets the requirements for Texas Education Code § 38.0041 policies addressing Sexual Abuse and Other Maltreatment of Children.

Commercial & Sexual Exploitation of Children

1.5 Hours
This course will teach participants about the root causes of commercial sexual exploitation, actions adults can take to reduce the risk of children being commercially sexually exploited, and why preventing sexual abuse is important to reducing the risk of children being sexually exploited.

Becoming Trauma Aware

1-2.5 Hours
In this training, you will learn how trauma can impact an individual and ways to create a trauma aware environment. This includes; learning how trauma may impact a developing brain, and understanding how to promote safety, respect, and understanding for those around you. This training will also incorporate core concepts from the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, developed by Dr. Bruce Perry, to help incorporate developmentally appropriate neurosensitive interventions.

Trauma & the Sensory Brain

1 – 2.5 Hours
Trauma and the Sensory Brain, an innovative approach to sensory integration, provides an overview of how the Center for Child Protection, a certified Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) site, has developed a trauma informed system of care through the evidence-based approach of Dr. Bruce Perry. This presentation discusses the overlap of trauma and the sensory system and how this impacts the way children react to their environment. Furthermore, the presentation will discuss how to tailor interventions based on sensory system development.

Child abuse happens in every part of Travis County. It crosses all ethnic, socio-economic and religious backgrounds. The responsibility of protecting children rests on the shoulders of our community.

Bystanders Protecting Children

1 Hour
In this course, participants will learn how to be an active bystander and practical steps to make interventions that reinforce boundaries and protect children. Active bystanders play an important role in protecting children by sensing something is unsafe or witnessing a vulnerable situation for a child and making the decision to claim responsibility for a child’s well-being.
